My Creative Process for “La Fuerza”
Not long ago, I was asked to create a mask with an interior and exterior persona. The idea was in my head, somewhere. I sketched up what I was thinking: color palettes and designs, different ways or materials that would work to make the idea in my mind become a tangible piece of art clearly expressing my vision. Here is where I usually get stuck, no matter what I’m working on...painting or photography. Creating something out of nothing is easy, but bringing to life exactly the kaleidoscope of vibrant images that are in my mind is my greatest challenge. I knew I wanted to express the contrast between the fluidity of the figure’s graceful movement within her soft pink silk wrap and the jagged harshness of metal. For this mask sculpture, I found inspiration from Ernest Trova’s “Falling man” sculpture and 500 feet of copper wire... and my vision was fulfilled.
I believe everyone’s strength is their passion. No matter what it is, when it’s being pursued, it’s being pursued creatively. From the chemist who designed the pill you take every morning, to the chef who presents the strikingly picturesque plate of food that delights every sense. Being creative is simply embracing one’s passion. Everywhere you look in life there is creativity. “The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” – Henry David Thoreau
